Murudeshwar Temple!

Murudeshwar, being another name of the Hindu God is a town in the Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada district in the state of Karnataka that holds the world’s second tallest statue of Lord Shiva. Famous for the Murudeshwara Temple here, the bewitching point is the Raja Gopuram that is 20 storied tall covering average feet 237feet at the entrance of the temple and the Arabian Seat that is encircled on all the three sides of the temple. This temple view is one of the gripping points to consider here because of its scenic significance of the shore. Built on a small hillock named Kanduka, the prime sanctum of the temple holds the same quaint flavor with its exteriors renovated in contemporary style.
Right below the idol is a small cave that is dark most of the times and besides it, is a shrine dedicated to Shaneeshwara. Also, at the foot of the statue is a temple devoted to Shri Rameshwara. All these are enclosed within the Raja Gopuram where there are two elephant statues that are believed to guard the temple.
The significance of the Temple-
1. It is believed that Lord Shiva had given the Atma Linga to Ravana and the cloth covering the Linga was thrown at this spot.
2. This temple is believed to be Shiva’s one of the Pancha Kshetras with the remaining four to be Dharmasthala, Nanjanagud, Gokarna, and Dhareshwara.
3. Another noticing point is the mammoth statue of the Lord that is erected in such a way that the sun’s first rays fall on it.
4. The Gopuram that is on its exterior is said to be the second tallest Gopurams of all in the world with the first being the Srirangam Temple in Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
The Temple’s Chronicles-
Every temple has an etymology and the chronicle of this temple dates back to the era of Ramayana where the demon king Ravana was tricked to save the world from him creating havoc. The Atma Linga belongs to Shri Maheshwara and all gods pray to the Linga to attain immortality. Knowing this, King Ravana did his penance for acquiring the Linga and Mahadeva had granted him but Narada on knowing the after consequences of the demon king’s acquisition approached Lord Ganesha and explained him the scenario.
So, to confiscate the Lingam from him, Mahavishnu blotted out the sun to give the appearance of the dusk and eventually Ravana would perform the evening ritual but with the Atma Linga in hand, he was thinking to whom to give Lingam. Sri Vinayaka tricked him by saying that he would call Ravana thrice and if doesn’t respond then he would keep the Linga down. He did as said and after Ravana coming to know what had happened, tried to uproot and destroy the linga. Because of the force exerted by him, the head of the Linga got scattered to the present place Surathkal and the cloth covering the Linga to the present place Murudeshwar.
