Top 5 Enchanting Places to Visit in Madurai

What comes to mind when you think of Madurai? Take a survey to check what people would say and I bet it’s going to be “Temples” and why not? Madurai is known for its marvellous sculptures carved very intricately but besides this, there are few other things that make Madurai the most visited place in Tamil Nadu; the Dravidian art and culture that has become the hub of the entire southern India, the bustling city whose chatter never ends, the famous bull-taming sport called “Jallikattu”, the sensational greenery and the Arabian or Indian Jasmine. All these are by-products of this famous city. With such a flawless and spectacular creation, your visit to this place should never be missed and that too, it being just 462 km from Chennai. If you ever plan to visit, ensure that you make up to these five places;
1. Sree Meenakshi Amman Temple — Madurai city is built around this temple. The city’s structure is shaped in the form of a lotus with the temple in the center and streets in a concentric manner. Constructed by the Pandya King Kulasekara Pandian, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The extensive premises with 1000 pillars inside the temple is an example of architectural brilliance thus making this conception as one of the ideal specimens of the Dravidian architecture.
2. Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple — this temple is considered to be one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan where he slew the evil Surapadman and married Deivayanai. It is built in rock-cut architecture and is believed to have been constructed by the Pandyas during the 6th century.
3. Gandhi Museum — the building that houses the museum was constructed by Queen Rani in the year 1670 AD but was later transformed to Gandhi’s memorial place after his assassination in the year 1959. There is a library in there that holds a vast collection of India’s culture and books written by Gandhi. Also, there is an exhibition section that includes the 265 illustrations of our freedom struggle.
4. Samanar Hills — also called as Samanar Malai is hill- rock architecture located in Keelakuyilkudi village some 15 km from Madurai city. The hills have caves where Jain monks were believed to have lived. With numerous stone beds and sculptures, this place is worth sight-seeing.
5. Gorippalayam Mosque — Gorippalayam comes from the Persian word “gor” meaning “grave”. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the largest mosques in Madurai housing the tombs of two great rulers; Sulthan Alauddin Badusha and Sulthan Shamsuddin Badusha. Its dome is 70 feet in diameter and 20 feet in height and is made of a single black stone which was brought from the Azhaga Hills.

Travelling to Goa on Valentine Day

With valentine day around the corner most couples plan special outings. This time we wanted to do something special and were brainstorming about it and hit on a great idea. We decided to spend the romantic day in Goa. Goa with its romantic beaches, happening night life, popular night clubs and casinos seemed like the best choice.
The best option from Chennai would have been to fly down to the party state, but we wanted to make the entire trip memorable and so chose to travel by bus. It was a no brainer to book our tickets with the most dependable e-ticketing portal, TicketGoose. There were not many options for this almost twenty hour journey so we quickly zeroed in on a semi-sleeper Volvo bus that was to depart from Chennai around 3:00 in the afternoon. This would mean that we would be reaching Goa around 11:00 in the morning, next day that is on Valentine’s Day.
Once the tickets were booked, we hurriedly packed our bags and made our way to the bus station. Even in the hurry I had remembered to pack something special for a romantic evening outing in Goa. On our way we picked up some snacks and drinks to keep us fueled during the journey.
Once on-board the bus, we settled down comfortably and spent the afternoon chit chatting and playing various word games whose rules had been tweaked to suit the mood! Those snacks sure did come handy. The bus stopped at a mid station where we picked up some hot coffee to keep us in the mood till we stopped again for dinner.
We continued with our romantic games and soon it was time for the dinner stop. After dinner the bus lights were dimmed down as most travelers were by now sleepy. We spent a couple of more hours listening to songs on our earphones and settled in our blankets on the comfy seats for the night. After a comfortable night’s sleep we were woken with the bus stopping for breakfast. It hits us that it was Valentine’s Day and that we would be in Goa in a couple of hours. The bus started again, after giving all of us sufficient time to freshen up and gobble down hot breakfasts.
The scenery outside had changed considerably and the greenery was soothing. At times we could smell saltiness in the air. We were both feeling all hyped and were looking forward to spend this special day in this romantic city. The coastal vegetation was mesmerizing and I realized greener than that of ‘Nama Chennai’. The clothes worn by the locals were very different. I was feeling excited as I knew we would spend some time exploring the local culture too.
The bus dropped us on the bus station and after some enquires we made our way to our hotel. After freshening up and spending a couple of lazy hours we decided to go discover all of what Goa had on offer.

6 Reasons Why Should You Take Bus

Traveling to different places makes a person more confident and optimist towards life. Moreover, it gives an opportunity meet people from different class and background, to know about them and their culture. And bus journey provides ample amount and exposure towards fun and adventure. But why would anybody spend six hours on a bus from Chennai to Bangalore, watching trees pass by and using (gasp!) a public toilet or with no choice of getting the chance to get relieved at all, when you could fly instead?
Bus Travel is Comfy
With a reputation for being moderate, unclean and uncomfortable, public transport is a travel alternative that is ignored by most travelers (or if nothing else by those matures enough to have outgrown their knapsacks). Be that as it may, in the event that you haven’t used an inter-city transport in a while, you very well might be astounded by how they’ve changed. Bus travel is indeed the most reasonably priced transport system to go from one place to the other. With amazingly moderate rates and new civilities, transport travel is more luring than it’s ever been.
Traveling at this stage has reached a different point. People are busy, cranky, packed with work five days a week, earning good…and so do they want a good escape at least once in a week to a good place. And for people working in private firms, buses give them a good advantage. They can book easily and hop on from their nearest destination. Chennai has a good bus transport facility may it Government bus MTC or private travels. And moreover, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus is one of the biggest bus stations in Asia. So, it would be a shame to call oneself a travel enthusiast if you haven’t boarded a bus at least once from CMBT in Koyambedu, Chennai.
I will tell you why traveling by bus is so much better than traveling by plane, or train, or by car.
No need for advance planning
One of the most annoying things about flying or traveling by train is you have to plan your trips months in advance to get a good deal or to get your seat reserved, as prices tend to soar the closer you get to the date of departure. Nobody has the luxury of planning a trip or journey in a relaxed manner. Smartphones and laptops are so handy these days, just download a bus booking app and book you seat on the go! Redbus, Travelyaari, Ticketgoose, etc. are one of the leading ticketing platforms that offer sales and deals on tickets to win over their travelers.
No missing baggage
In trains and flights, there is no guarantee of not losing your baggage. The chances are there in buses too, no doubt, but you can have a closer check on your luggage in the bus. The other reason many be less number of passenger accommodation compared to trains and flights.
More options
In case of catching or booking buses, you got a lot of options. You can either catch MTC buses or one among many private travels. A lot of private concerns have embraced the new technology and have blended very well with it. Now there is a facility where you can track your bus and know its whereabouts. Redbus has come up with an innovative idea like cab booking option, where you can track the bus route and book your ticket according to its availability.
No need of arriving hours in advance
Unlike catching a flight, boarding bus is much more convenient. I hate to wake up early almost at the middle of the night at 3:00 AM to catch a flight at 6:00 AM because you need to be at the airport two hours in advance of your boarding time. Why? Because there is a huge passengers’ queue while taking the flight pass, and also while boarding.
Better use of personal time
Taking the bus instead of self driving frees up time to do something that you appreciate. You can utilize the bust travel time very well, like to catch up on emails, text your mates, read the paper or a novel, watch movie, etc. Or simply relax; let someone else do the driving.
No worries about tolls
Recently Tamil Nadu Govt. has increased the toll rates. So, taking the bus instead of driving yourself saves you money on gas, parking, and tolls.
There are a few limitations in bus travel as you cannot stretch your legs every now and then or walk a while and loo facility in the bus. However, this problem has been solved with sleeper buses. Some people prefer traveling by road as they find it convenient to stop every now and then to freshen up or have snacks at the roadside dhabas. See, you have more comfort than you expected in bus travel. So, young hearts and travel enthusiasts kick your lazy bums get some sun every weekend. Pack your travel bag, book bus ticket, explore your next destination.
