Secunderabad – The Twin Brother of Hyderabad

Both nationally as well as internationally, Hyderabad is most famous as ‘twin cities’. Yes, the other twin is called Secunderabad. It is not as historic as Hyderabad, but is home to the Hussain Sagar Lake, which practically divides Secunderabad from Hyderabad.
Secunderabad is famous for its railway station — which happens to be one of the major railway stations in the city. In fact, it is quite arguable that the station is the most biggest and important in the city. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is located at a distance of 36 km from the Secunderabad railway station. Cabs depending on the driver you choose can easily bring you in for a fare of Rs. 600. Airport buses too ply on this route regularly, though the airport bus stop is a kilometre away and may be a bit difficult for a newcomer to find.

The railway station as well as the adjoining bus stands and a bus depot, walk-able from the famous Clock Tower (built by the British in 1896), make it into a real travel hub of the city. There are no areas in the city to which buses from Secunderabad do not ply. One of the reasons why I love to make it to Secunderabad is to catch a bus with readily available seats when I intend to head to the historic Charminar. One is reminded of the horrors of crowded local trains of Mumbai if he or she dares to take a bus from other areas such as Mehdipatnam or Nampally to Charminar.

Just to spice things a little bit, one of the best Biryani restaurants of the city is located exactly in this location. You don’t even have to walk much. It is just that you reach the station or the bus stand and there you are in front of the Alpha Hotel. Some say that some of the best Pulao dish (a North Indian variant of the Biryani) is only available here. Innumerable eateries are also available in the area. If you have enough time, you can take an autorickshaw for a fare of Rs. 30–50 and head to the Sindhi Colony for some fabulous North Indian delicacies such as chaat and mithai. In cases of emergencies, the famous Yashoda Hospital is also present in the area.
The boarding points for intercity buses are just opposite the railway station and the city bus stop. Many counters of top operators such as Kesineni Travels, VRL Travels,,Meghana Travels,National Travels,Madurai Radha Travels,Greenline Travels,Universal Travels,ABT Travels and others connecting Hyderabad to Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and others are all located here.
