We know that Goa is the richest state, the smallest yet the most literate state and a place loved by tourists for spending their weekend getaways as a sense of rejuvenation and realm. Goa- steeped deep in History, its culture is truly unbounded and international. So, let’s take a shot glimpse of what can flabbergast you;
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Goa? Yea, you are right, Bars. A small state like Goa has a huge number of licensed bars with number outranging to 7000. If licensed includes this many then what would be the total tally of unlicensed as well. Astounding isn’t it? But it’s prevailing. Now, looking onto our second aspect, it is the non-decomposing body of St. Francis Xavier;
When the Portuguese ruled Goa, St. Xavier, in the year 1542 started his mission of spreading the gospel. He tried to instill the faith of Christianity in one and as part of his duty, went ahead to introduce Christianity in China. His trip continued from place to place and on a visit to Macau, he died and from where his body was brought back to Goa in the year 1553. His decomposing body now remains the world-famous Basilica of Jesus Church. The third aspect embraces of the abundant ecosystem spread over the state with 275 species of birds and 40 different types of animals and reptiles all protected in the wildlife sanctuary of the state.

Secunderabad – The Twin Brother of Hyderabad

Both nationally as well as internationally, Hyderabad is most famous as ‘twin cities’. Yes, the other twin is called Secunderabad. It is not as historic as Hyderabad, but is home to the Hussain Sagar Lake, which practically divides Secunderabad from Hyderabad.
Secunderabad is famous for its railway station — which happens to be one of the major railway stations in the city. In fact, it is quite arguable that the station is the most biggest and important in the city. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is located at a distance of 36 km from the Secunderabad railway station. Cabs depending on the driver you choose can easily bring you in for a fare of Rs. 600. Airport buses too ply on this route regularly, though the airport bus stop is a kilometre away and may be a bit difficult for a newcomer to find.
Secunderabad Station (Courtesy — Deccan Chronicle)
The railway station as well as the adjoining bus stands and a bus depot, walk-able from the famous Clock Tower (built by the British in 1896), make it into a real travel hub of the city. There are no areas in the city to which buses from Secunderabad do not ply. One of the reasons why I love to make it to Secunderabad is to catch a bus with readily available seats when I intend to head to the historic Charminar. One is reminded of the horrors of crowded local trains of Mumbai if he or she dares to take a bus from other areas such as Mehdipatnam or Nampally to Charminar.
Clock Tower
Just to spice things a little bit, one of the best Biryani restaurants of the city is located exactly in this location. You don’t even have to walk much. It is just that you reach the station or the bus stand and there you are in front of the Alpha Hotel. Some say that some of the best Pulao dish (a North Indian variant of the Biryani) is only available here. Innumerable eateries are also available in the area. If you have enough time, you can take an autorickshaw for a fare of Rs. 30–50 and head to the Sindhi Colony for some fabulous North Indian delicacies such as chaat and mithai. In cases of emergencies, the famous Yashoda Hospital is also present in the area.
The boarding points for intercity buses are just opposite the railway station and the city bus stop. Many counters of top operators such as Kesineni Travels, VRL Travels,,Meghana Travels,National Travels,Madurai Radha Travels,Greenline Travels,Universal Travels,ABT Travels and others connecting Hyderabad to Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and others are all located here.

Ride to Andhra to Clebrate Ugadi

Ugadi or Yugadi in Sanskrit means “beginning of the new age”. The first day of the lunar month, Chaitra is considered to be the auspicious day for the festival’s commemoration. It is a day marking the start of the New Year for the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka where this fiesta is celebrated with extreme entertainment and vehemence. It also greets the start of spring with new leaves and buds blooming beautifully thereby creating a spiritual festive mood amongst all. This day signifies two myths; some say it is the day Lord Brahma, the creator of the world started his creation and few others believe the day to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Matsya Avatar.
Be the reason be blended over mythological views, Ugadi gathers the huge attention of people and media as well. Preparation for this festival is planned a week before its commencement with houses cleaned, traditional dresses purchased and with other necessary items procured for decorating the residences. On Ugadi, people wake up before dawn; give a massage to their body and head with Sesame oil and post bathing, starts decorating the entrance of their houses with fresh mango leaves as Lord Kartikeya and Ganesha were very fond of mangoes and tying it on the doorway depicts prosperity and well-being.

This day is also marked by social merriment by preparing delicious dishes and greeting their neighbors with it. In Andhra Pradesh, edibles like Pulihora, Bobbatlu and Ugadi Pachadi are made. The Ugadi Pachadi is nothing but Chutney of six basic delicacies comprising Neem flowers, Jaggery, Green Chilli, Salt, Tamarind and tender Mango seeds each signifying a feeling or emotion with neem flowers denoting sadness, jaggery- happiness, green chilli- anger, salt- fear, tamarind- disgust and mango seeds- surprise. Later, people gather and sit around to listen to Panchanga Sravanam where the elderly will read the almanac.
Some visit temples as well to pray for prosperity and happiness in the New Year. If you are planning to site this festival to know more about its celebration and to get yourselves involved in its rhyme, I suggest you head towards Vijayawada or Hyderabad where it is commemorated with huge zeal and fervor. So, make your bookings only with ticketgoose.com!.Travel operators providing Services to these places are Parveen Travels,Patel Travels,SRM Travels,KPN Travels and SRS Travels.

Frolicking on the Tannirbhavi Beach

The city of Mangalore in Karnataka, which is about 300 km from Bangalore, has numerous beaches that are still untouched. Coupled with the salivating sea food and the mouth-watering Mangalorean cuisine, it makes for a perfect weekend getaway. I love going to this lovely city just for its beaches and I never get bored of them. The Tannirbhavi Beach in Perambur is my favourite, as this 2-km stretch beach is not crowded even during the peak season; giving you the feeling of a private beach.
To reach this beach located about 11 km away from the city, you will have to travel on a ferry from Sultan Battery or hit the road via the Edapally-Panvel Highway that will take you through the picturesque Mangalore Port. You can also take a state-run or a private bus to this area.

Look out for the Watch Tower at Sultan Battery

En route to the beach, stop by at Sultan battery. The first thing you will notice here is the colossal watch tower. You might mistake it for a fort initially, but as you draw closer to the massive structure, you realise what it actually is. Built by Tippu Sultan in 1784 with black stones, this watchtower was mounted with cannons around its perimeter to check the entry of English warships from entering the Gurupur River.

It is said that there is a secret tunnel near this structure that leads to Tippu Sultan’s Srirangapatnam Fort. The view from the watchtower overlooking the Tannirbhavi Beach and the Arabian Sea is breathtakingly beautiful. I sat there for an hour or so, just enjoying the view. The fishing boats moored on the shore make the seascape even more alluring.

A ferry to ferry you across

The ferry ride from Sultan Battery to Tannirbhavi Beach on the other side of Gurupur River was fun. At the landing pier there were small crabs scurrying about. There is a beautiful church on the way where you can have some quiet moments before you hit the beach.
Courtesy: rajeshchaurasia.blogspot.com — Sunset at Tannirbhavi Beach
The waves were surging towards me but I went ahead and enjoyed the cool and soothing sea water. This beach is ideal for those who like to be in less crowded places. You can just sit back and enjoy a good picnic with your family without being bothered about the onlookers, as you will hardly find any. It is serene except for the occasional roaring sound of the huge waves. A few shacks along the beach road offersome delicious seafood. So, isn’t good food along the quiet beach reason enough for you to visit this beach, the next time you are in Mangalore? The water activities too will keep you on your toes, if you are interested in water sports.

When to Visit

The best time to visit this place would be during the winter when you can go far into the sea and jump with the waves. Monsoon season makes it very beautiful, but the sea gets rough and you might not be allowed to venture far by the life guards who constantly monitor your step.

Where to Stay

Mangalore has plenty of hotels to suit the pocket of each one of you. So, whether you are looking for a luxury hotel or a budget one, you will find them all.
Next time you travel to Mangalore, make sure you visit the Tannirbhavi Beach and enjoy a day amidst the quiet surroundings. To book your tickets for Mangalore, log on to TicketGoose.com.Some of the travel operators providing services are ABT Travels,Konduskar Travels,Meghana Travels,Rathimeena Travels,Paulo Travels,National Travels and Universal Travels.

Kausani: An Offbeat Trail

The weekend was coming up and we wanted to get away to the hills nearby, but not to the crowded hill stations. After looking up for some offbeat destinations, we zeroed down on Kausani, which is tucked away atop a ridge at an altitude of 1,890 m in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Located about 460 km away from Delhi, it is a good over nine hours’ drive.
We set out around 4 pm, but as the long weekend was just coming up, the streets were jam packed. The traffic was not moving beyond Ghaziabad. It was a bad decision to start so late in the evening. Finally, around midnight, after dinner in Ghaziabad, we could resume our journey as the traffic starting easing. We drove through the mountainous terrain of Kashipur, Ramnagar and Ranikhet, for over 6 hours before we reached our destination.
Pic credit: Rajeend K
As we entered the town, its greenery was refreshing. The terrain was laden with towering pine trees, emerald green meadows, streams and waterfalls. The silent valleys were full of beautiful cottages. We passed by vast expanses of pears orchards. It had rained the previous night, so the mist was everywhere.
Around Town:
Mahatma Gandhi had aptly called this place the “Switzerland of India.” He took refuge in this picturesque hill station to pen his Bhagavad Gita treatise Anasakti Yoga in 1929. The Anashakti Ashram (2 minutes’ drive from the main town) stands testimony to his presence in this place.
If the valley is not shrouded with mist, you will be lucky to see the glistering snow-capped peaks — Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli — from several points. The tea gardens in this town are alluring. You can drive down or simple enjoy a walk through the valley to the tea gardens (5 km). Do not forget to buy some tea leaves that are exported across the world.
Next, you can head to the Rudradhari Falls and Caves, located 9 km away on the Kausani-Almora Road. However, if you are not up for trekking, then this place is not meant for you. The 2-km trek will not be an uphill task for those who are fit and up for adventure. The small brooks on the way make the landscape even more beautiful.
Bajinath Temples (16 km) can be your next stop. Legend has it that the Pandavas built the temples to honour Lord Shiva. You can spend some quiet time amidst the ancient rock-cut temples that are maintained by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). Shivaratri, celebrated in February-March at the temples, attracts a huge number of devotees from the town as well as from the nearby villages.
Pic credit: Rajeend K
However, for me this is the place where you will simply love to just sit back and look at the darting clouds, changing every minute, till the evening sets in and the entire valley lights up. After a while, you will enjoy the game of hide-and-seek the entire valley plays as it gets engulfed in the mist.
Cuisine:
For food, you will have to depend on the hotel you are staying in; you will get everything there from Chinese to Continental to Indian. There are restaurants in the town, where you can sample Kumaoni food as well.
Where to Stay:
Kausani might be an offbeat destination, but the town is full of budget as well as luxury hotels. Some of the options for you are Blossom Resort (Tariff — Rs. 1,700), Himalayan Village Resort (Tariff — Rs. 2,000 onwards) and Kausani Best Inn (Tariff — Rs. 3,000).
Shopping:
You can pick up some shawls and mufflers from the local shops here. There is a shawl factory in the town, where you will find really good handmade Kausani shawls. They are not up for bargaining, so you might as well avoid it.
You can buy some seasonal fruits, too. There were a lot of pears in the market when we visited the town.
Getting there:
If you are travelling from Delhi, you can hire a cab or take a bus. There are no direct buses to Kausani. The best option is to take a bus till Haldwani (over five hours’ journey) from where you will get a direct bus to Kausani. The Bus travel operator providing service from Delhi are Paulo Travels,National Travels,Greenline Travels,Hebron Travels,SVR Travels and Madurai Radha Travels.Book your bus tickets from any of the online bus ticket bookingportals. It will hardly take you four hours from Haldwani by state-run buses that cater to passengers travelling on this route. You can check out for bus tickets to Haldwani at www.ticketgoose.com.

After spending three days in the pine-scented cottage, it was time to leave. It was pouring when we left Kausani around 10 am. Driving through the long winding roads amidst the rain-soaked pine trees, gushing waterfalls at every bend and lush green forests was not a dampener at all. Though we had to tread carefully, and there were long jams on the road, we were not complaining as we couldn’t take our eyes off from the beautiful surroundings.
