From Dwarasamudra to Halebidu- The Temple Town!

“Architecture is a visual art, and the buildings speak for themselves”, goes a renowned saying on ancient architecture. India’s ancient architecture roars high on various artifacts; from temples to minarets to varied heritage sites. Example of one such site which is worth a visit and known for their exquisite craftsmanship is Halebidu; a temple town that is in close proximity to Belur and Chikmagalur.
This town in the Hassan district of Karnataka is considered as the “Jewel of Indian Architecture” that was formerly called as Dwarasamudra, a royal capital of the Hoysala Kingdom. Halebidu got its name, “The Old City” because of the fact that it was ruined twice during the invasion of Kafur. If you are thinking what this temple town can show you, then get mesmerized with the construction of two Hindu temples by soapstone; Hoysaleswara and Kedareswara with a dam, museum and a Jain Basadi.
The Hoysaleswara Temple is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva that is constructed on a star-shaped platform during the rule of King Vishnuvardhana and Queen Shantala Devi. Also pronounced as Hoyaleshwara, its construction took nearly 100 years with its walls beautifully and intricately carved with depictions from Hindu mythology. Each sculpture here looks like an antique piece that’s to be adored off.
The Kedareswara Temple is another gem of architecture constructed under the rule of King Ballala II that is also a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva built in the Chalukyas Style. This temple is now protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Society of India.
Basadi Halli is known for its Jain Monastries. This temple is constructed during the rule of King Vishnuvardhana; though he, being a Vaishnavite, his wife was following Jainism at that time when rulers were encouraging texts, studies, rituals, and architecture. Basadi Halli comprises three main temples dedicated to Jain saint Parshwanathswamy, Adinathswamy and Shanthinathswamy.
Yagachi Dam, unlike the other dams similar in structure, is known for various water sports; Jet Ski, Speed Boat, Bumper Ride and Banana Boat Ride that is conducted here.
